Switzerland is a great place to spend your holiday. The diversity of our mountainous country provides the country with its special identity. Switzerland is best known for its banks, great variety of cheeses and chocolate, famous watches and its public transport system. And of course,Switzerland is known to be the land of the Alps ! But snow-topped mountains, cows with large bells, cableways and ski-lifts are not all you can expect from a visit to this small country that has been a major tourist attraction since tourism was invented there. Switzerland is a land of contrasts - you can sit under palm trees growing on the lake shores in the warm and sunny Ticino situated on the southern side of the Alps, and look at mountain peaks covered by eternal snow and ice. Canyons with wild waters and steep rocks are just one hour away from the convenience of larger cities. Not only Switzerland's mountain resorts, but also the towns and cities are worth visiting as most Swiss cities do have a fairly-well preserved medieval Old Town with castles, cathedrals and beautiful old houses.
Switzerland is situated in the center of Europe and most of its territory (approx. 65%) is covered by the Alps. This majestic mountain range extends from the west bordering France to the east bordering Austria. The country is land-locked without accessing any sea, and further is neighboring Germany in the north, Italy in the south, and Liechtenstein in the east - see Swiss Map.... Switzerland is a small country (approx. size of New Jersey) and its main tourism destinations are concentrated within a short distance from each other making it possible to visit several attractive places within a relatively short period. The country offers many impressive peaks, beautiful lakes and interesting cities - see Swiss Tourism Regions / Main Attractions....

The Swiss are obsessed with cleanliness, punctuality and a good working attitude which rewards them the highest standard of living in Europe. The infrastructure for tourists is very developed, and the Swiss are friendly and proud of the beauty of Switzerland. A longstanding tourist tradition will leave you with long lasting memories of a great holiday. Many Swiss speak decent English, and one other Swiss languages - French, German, Italian, or Romansch.
